About Health Care Institute (HCI)
Freedom from pain is a basic human right!
Health Care Institute (HCI) is a voluntary Organisation initiated by a group of progressive, secular and service minded citizens in May 1998. HCI is located in the historical town of Kodungallur in Thrissur District. Registered under the Charitable Societies Registration Act, HCI is the first Non-Governmental Organisation in Kerala in the field of Palliative Care.
HCI is the satellite unit of Pain and Palliative Care Clinic, Kozhikode and Nodal Center of Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. At HCI, the patient is the most important consideration. Our culture is creating high standards for patient care.
Our Vision
To develop a Health Care System in which palliative care is integrated in all health care functions, including cancer care, so that every person has access to effective pain relief, adequate social & emotional support and quality palliative care along with disease–specific treatment. To integrate Palliative Care with the Old Age Care (Geriatric care) and extend its benefit to the deserving Senior Citizens of Kodungallur.
To uphold and stand for values that respect human rights, secularism and to create an atmosphere of respect and care.
In the realm of organization, HCI Stands for a meaningful democracy and transparency in operation that is accessible to any individual who is interested in the functioning of HCI and the maintenance of our accounts.
History
HCI was Inaugurated by Sri Rajunarayana Swamy IAS the District Collector, Thrissur on 17 May 1998. With its initial operation in a rented building, HCI s tarted functioning at rented building,but now functions in its own building in plot that forms part of the Kodungallur Kovilakam, a heritage site hallowed by the memory of the 19th century classisit ‘Kodungallur Kunjikuttan Thampuran who translated the Mahabharata and the Macbeth to Malayalam.
HCI has already conducted 38 Early Cancer detection camps and 68 awareness classes in and around Kodungallur.
On 15th 2015 HCI conducted. On this occasion a beautiful sculpture of Kodungallur Kunjukuttan Thampuran. What we do?
- HCI runs a Pain and Palliative Care Clinic with an outpatient and a home care unit. The clinic is managed by a doctor, a nurse and trained volunteers. The home care unit visits the patients who are unable to come to the clinic. The realm is not one of unequal power equations between a doctor and patient or between donor and recipient, but of love and respect.
- HCI focuses on the psychological, emotional, social and spiritual agonies of the
patients, spurs them to embrace life and supports the family of the patients with the emotional energy needed to lift their spirits. - HCI conducts early Cancer detection camps, surveys and awareness programs,
and organises classes, seminars and workshops on public health issues at
regular intervals. - HCI also acts in protecting human rights, imparting secular culture and solidarity. All the services offered by HCI are free of cost.
